Christian Bajada Renshi, and Roderick Bajada Renshi, together with eight of their students from Jiushin Kan Malta, travelled to Kyoto, Japan, to participate in the 5th World Butoku Sai and 54th All Japan Butoku Sai (Martial Arts Virtues Festival). The large-scale event, hosted by Japan’s Oldest and Premier Martial Arts Society, took place between the 24th and the 30th of April, and welcomed over 700 participants from 20 different nations.
The Maltese delegation consisted of: Christian Bajada Renshi, Roderick Bajada Renshi, Terence Bartolo, Joseph Bajada, Patrick Aquilina, Charles Bartolo, Antoine Muscat, George Caruana, Anthony Caruana and Ian Wallace.
On the 25th of April, the brothers Bajada were amongst the selected few to demonstrate their skills on the occasion of the opening of the Seiryu Den, in the Shorenin Temple, which is one of the five Imperial Temples of Japan. It is worth mentioning that the Seiryu Den houses the national Japanese treasure- the Fudo Myoo painting.
On the 29th of April, the Maltese team demonstrated Jujutsu on the Hardwood Butoku Den floor in the 5th World Butoku Sai, in the presence of Her Imperial Highness Princess Akiko of Mikasa. The delegation also demonstrated Jujutsu and Iaido on the 30th of April in the International Rensei Taikai. Demonstrations consisted of Jiushin Ryu Jujutsu, Seitei Iaido and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu.
On both occasions, the Maltese team was awarded with the Highest Honors of ‘Dantai Yushu Sho’ (Team Outstanding Excellence Award). All Jiushin Kan members were awarded individually. Christian and Roderick Bajada Renshi were also awarded the ‘Butoku Dedication and Service award’ in the presence of Her Imperial Highness Princess Akiko of Mikasa. In total, Jushin Kan Malta brought home fourteen prestigious awards. Everyone present for the event had immeasurable praise for the Maltese Team on its outstanding demonstrations.
During the Training Seminar, the Maltese team had training sessions in the Kyoto Budo Center with Fujii Hanshi, Watanabe Kyoshi of Muso Jikiden Ryu Iaijutsu, Kuwahara Hanshi, Kitano Hanshi and Kinoshita Kyoshi of Shinden Ryu Jujutsu. At the end of the event, the Bajada Brothers were awarded the title of Renshi in Iaido during the closing ceremony.
